Story‘s Pacing

Beyond the romance, the manga also explores the challenges of life in a small rural village. Many of the villagers cling to old traditions and prejudices, making it difficult for anyone who does not fit their expectations to feel accepted. Throughout the story, several characters struggle with discrimination, social exclusion, and the pressure to conform. At the same time, the older generation has a hard time adapting to changing values and more modern ways of thinking, creating tension between long-held beliefs and a younger generation seeking change. As these conflicts unfold, the story emphasizes healing, understanding, and learning to accept both others and oneself.

Against this backdrop, the romance between Haerang and Miro develops at a slow and believable pace. The two unexpectedly reunite after knowing each other in the past, and although they recognize each other immediately, Miro avoids being seen with Haerang because he fears the rumors their reunion might spark in such a close-knit community. Nevertheless, they gradually rebuild their friendship, and their growing feelings become increasingly obvious. By Chapter 27, they are still only friends, but their inner thoughts make it clear that they both want their relationship to become something more, even though neither of them is ready to confess.

Meanwhile, the story introduces two other characters who could be considered potential love interests. Daeseok, the owner of a local coffee shop, develops feelings for Haerang. However, he never comes across as a serious romantic rival, as the story makes it clear that Haerang’s feelings lie elsewhere. Likewise, Ok-hee shares a close bond with Miro and the two even dated in the past. However, she has already moved on, and their relationship remains purely platonic.

What I particularly enjoyed is that the manga never relies on unnecessary romantic drama. Instead of creating conflict through love triangles, excessive jealousy, or endless misunderstandings, it allows both the romance and the characters to develop naturally. As a result, the relationships feel mature, believable, and refreshingly grounded, fitting perfectly with the story’s broader themes of acceptance, personal growth, and healing.

Characters

Female Lead

The story follows Ma Haerang, who leaves Seoul behind and moves to the countryside after a painful breakup with her ex-boyfriend. Although she appears frail and delicate, causing those around her to constantly worry about her and treat her with excessive care, her personality is anything but weak. She has no trouble standing up to people much older than herself, especially when she encounters the villagers‘ prejudice against anything unfamiliar or new.

Ironically, while Haerang is fearless when confronting adults, she is much more cautious around people her own age. Having experienced bullying in the past, she constantly worries that they will judge or reject her. As a result, she tends to overthink even the smallest interactions. Despite these insecurities, she is far from being a pushover. Instead, she is outspoken, resilient, and willing to challenge unfair treatment whenever she sees it.

Male Lead

Miro is one of the most kind-hearted characters in the story. Because his mother is a foreigner, he has brown hair and green eyes, making him stand out in a small village where anyone who looks different quickly becomes the target of prejudice. As a result, he has endured bullying and discrimination for most of his life, yet he rarely stands up for himself when people mock him because of his appearance.

Instead, Miro devotes himself to helping those around him. As a freelancer, he takes on all kinds of jobs, from teaching elderly villagers how to read and write to helping children with their homework or preparing them for exams. His kindness, patience, and attentiveness make him someone the entire community can rely on.

Despite having been in love with Haerang for fifteen years, Miro refuses to acknowledge his feelings. When they reunite, he initially keeps his distance because he fears that getting close to her will once again make both of them the target of rumors and bullying. Although he is gentle, caring, and somewhat shy, he consistently puts other people’s well-being before his own.

Art

The art style is simple and not overly detailed, which fits the quiet atmosphere of the rural setting. Since village life is relatively uneventful, the clean artwork complements the story well instead of distracting from it. Most chapters also have their own title. The panels are generally small and easy to follow, but they are occasionally interrupted by large, beautifully drawn portraits that highlight emotional moments and add visual impact.

Back Where The Heart Belongs: My Personal Reading Experience

What made this manga enjoyable for me was that it avoids many of the typical problems found in romance stories. There is no excessive drama, unnecessary hatred, or overly tragic backstories. Instead, the story focuses on kind characters who are trying to heal, understand each other, and find their place in a community that is not always welcoming.

One of the things I appreciated most was the way the characters are portrayed. Haerang quickly became my favorite character because she is not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for others, even when it would be easier to stay quiet. I especially liked that she challenges the villagers when they judge things they do not understand. She is not simply a victim of their prejudice; she actively fights against it.

The romance between Haerang and Miro also feels believable because their feelings develop slowly and naturally. Their chemistry is strong, and their relationship is one of the highlights of the manga. However, I sometimes found their behavior a little too childish considering that both characters are already around 30 years old. Seeing them hesitate so much over something as simple as a kiss could feel a bit frustrating at times. Miro, in particular, is such a caring and attentive person, but I sometimes wished he had more confidence and stood up for himself instead of always putting others first.

Despite these small frustrations, the manga has a warm and comforting atmosphere. The artwork adds a lot to the experience, especially during funny, awkward, or cute moments. The way certain expressions and situations are drawn makes these scenes even more entertaining. Combined with the kind-hearted characters and the story’s message about acceptance, this makes the manga a pleasant and refreshing read.
